Empire of Dirt
My name is Scott Andrew Woodburn. I am a husband, father, minister and follower of Jesus. I am 32. I love stuff. I have over three hundred albums in my music collection. I have over three hundred books on my shelves. I have a car. I have four chickens. I own two lawnmowers but just one gazebo. Truly I have amassed a great and mighty empire of stuff. Yet I am reminded by the apostle Paul that my empire is made entirely of dirt. He writes “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:8) I’m getting older. Growing up. I used to tell people that by this stage I would be a professional wrestler or an astronaut or perhaps a professional wrestler who wrestled astronauts. Today I hope for more of Jesus. May I count my empire as one of dirt in order that I may gain Christ.
